Engineers Without Borders Toronto and the Institute of Mobile Technologies announce the Mobiles Without Borders Committee
May 28, 2011 – Toronto. Engineers Without Borders (EWB – http://www.ewb.ca) Toronto and the Institute of Mobile Technologies (IMT – http://www.iimt.ca) announced today the launch of the “Mobiles Without Borders” committee.
“The mobile committee was created in response to an increasing need to implement mobile technologies in efforts for social, economic and infrastructure development in Africa and other parts of the world” said Shayan Mashatian, Director of the Institute of Mobile Technologies. “Our lecturers and team members have been involved in several mobile projects on the ground and this has provided a keen ability to understand conditions that are necessary for success in utilizing mobile technologies for development”, Mashatian continued. “Providing a platform to connect experts in the field with the organizations involved in development is an important factor in supporting those projects and we are excited to partner with Engineers Without Borders to achieve that goal” he added.
“EWB envisions that the Canadian engineering sector will play a leading role in addressing the root causes of poverty in Africa by utilizing a systematic problem-solving approach and by leaning on technology only when it fits well within the socio-political andeconomic contexts,” says Shobhit Shanker, President of EWB Toronto City Network. He continues, “I am eager to see this collaboration unfold. EWB’s experience with the ‘on-the-ground’ realities in Africa and extensive network of engineering professionals in Canada will be complemented very well by IMT’s socially aware technical foundation. Both parties possess unique skills and perspectives that will enhance our ability to achieve our collective vision.”
The Mobiles Without Borders committee is committed to the following goals: 1. forming a platform to connect mobile technology experts from developed countries to their peers in Africa and other developing countries to facilitate technology and knowledge transfer; 2. supporting start-ups and businesses involved in mobile operations in Africa; and 3. providing Toronto professionals and development partners in Africa with educational sessions and seminars on mobile technologies for development applications and initiatives.
